Can you sink deeper today? Can you acknowledge things you normally ignore and recognize that they are part of you and are just as worthy of notice as the things you focus on every day?
We spend so much time at the surface of our lives. Sometimes it’s because we simply don’t have time to get deeper. Other times, it’s because we cannot fully explore without someone and there is nobody by our side to help. And still other times, we are resistant to what we know lies beneath. Of the three, I think the second is the hardest. The first is transitory and the third a matter of will but the second is relational and not fully within our control.
Often the things beneath are uncomfortable. They are unfamiliar. They may even be frightening. But they are part of us. In fact, they are a bigger part of us than we imagine because I believe change, real change, almost always happens beneath before it reaches the surface. And we know it’s there before we name it and that can create tension as well.
As you read this I wonder:
What is one thing beneath the surface that you can acknowledge today?
Can you look below periodically and try to stay ahead of what you are becoming?
Can what you find be a source of wonder, even when it is not who you wish you were?
What’s below is as real as what is at the surface. As you begin the week, can you be willing to wade a little deeper and see what you find?
